Coach Bios
Thomas Connor (Head Coach)
The 2009 season is Thomas' second year as the head coach for the Myers Park Rugby Football Club. Coach Connor is from Olympia, Washington, where he started his rugby career. In 1970, after high school, Thomas started his rugby career with the Mud Bay Ruggers Rugby Club of Evergreen State College. As a member of Mud Bay, he played an wide ranging schedule of teams from up and down the West Coast and into Canada. After two years, Thomas entered the US Air Force where he continued playing rugby for Hollowmen AFB until being ordered to Guam. While in Guam, he had the opportunity to play military teams from throughout the world, and would eventually be voted in as the club's president after one year of playing. Once his playing career finished, he spent the next 25 years raising a family, until he retired in 1998 as Vice President of Triton Internation Ltd. His son, Travis, revived his interest in the game by mentioning of a small rugby club at Myers Park High School, and from that time Thomas saw potential in the club to make it into a champion. He inhereted the team and helped to take it from a 15 man team to a 45 man team; which would eventually become the 2008 North Carolina State U-19/High School Runner-Ups. Thomas hopes to take the momentum from that season to build something even bigger and better in future seasons.
Frank McKinney (Asst. Coach)
The 2009 season is Frank's second year coaching rugby at Myers Park. Frank McKinney has played rugby for 17 years. He first started playing at Belmont Abbey College in 1990 where he would eventually become captain of the team. He then went and played for the Charlotte Rugby Club from 1992- present. While playing for Charlotte Frank has played on 2 North Carolina Select side teams, played in 2 south sevens championships, played on 6 south championships teams, 3 MARFU championship teams, and played in 8 super league games. Frank ended his fall season in 2007 tied for 4th in points scored for Charlotte, while Charlotte rugby captured there 3rd MARFU championship out of 4 years.
Matt Boylan (Asst. Coach)
The 2009 season is Matt's third year second year as an assistant with the Myers Park Rugby Football Club. His primary responsibilities this year will to develop new players, as well as assist with conditioning. Matt has been involved with rugby his entire life; most of it spent around the Charlotte Rugby Club. Knowledge and experience of the game has come through time spent with the Charlotte Rugby Club, and while attending school at North Carolina State University.
