So, you want to play rugby...
As North Carolina High School U-19 State Runner-Up last season, much of the success of the Club was directly due to your great parents and their support of the Club. We would like to extend our thanks to them and their efforts.
As a powerhouse in U-19 High School Rugby in North Carolina, we have a great responsibility to grow our membership and prepare for this upcoming year. We had 16 seniors who have moved on to play at many major Universities in the Southeast; such as NC State, UNC Charlotte, South Carolina, Clemson, Alabama, and App State. Many Universites and Colleges are now offering scholarships to its rugby players, and many other programs are beginning to see the exponential growth in our sport. As a result, many Colleges are now sending recruiters and scouts to high schools and U-19 tournaments.
Our club has an average of 45 to 50 players on the roster, and we compete with an A-side and B-side so that everyone has an opportunity to play. Please note that rugby is played with two 35 minute halves and requires great endurance and commitment to play. This year, we have a lot of freshmen and upper classmen coming out that have never played or even seen the game played before, so we begin the season with a strong emphasis on everyone learning the basics. We have been able to increase our coaching staff from 3 members to 5 members, and I feel this will give each player more personal time to work with the staff to increase their level of play. In an effort to help our sport continue to grow, Myers Park Rugby Football Club will help to launch the AG Middle School U-15 program. In addition to exposing more youths to rugby, this will directly impact our Club, as AG is a feeder school to Myers Park.
Our preseason beings in September and this is an extremely important time for our new players to learn and develop. The regular season starts in January and will run through May (including playoffs). The coaching staff and myself are always here to answer any question you may have. We will have a parent and players meeting soon, so visit our website for an update of a date and time.
